NEW YORK, NY – Girl Scouts of America pulled their most recent advertising campaign Tuesday after a storm of complaints for its “unrealistic, perverse and never before seen sexualization.”
In a statement released today, a Girl Scouts spokeswoman issued a nationwide apology for the advertisements. “Girl Scouts of America is committed to building courage, confidence, and character in young girls. Sometimes the way that we try to build this is not appropriate. Although they do not have the right of adults, it was absolutely wrong for us to sexualize cookies.”
The advertisements reportedly showed personified cookies in icing bikinis and with chocolate chip muscles enticing fat men and women outside supermarkets across the U.S.
Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and Overeaters Anonymous were among the organizations to oppose the ads. “Disgusting what we’ve seen in the new Girl Scouts advertisements! A gross sexualization and portrayal of the relationship between cookies and those that eat them.” Overeaters Anonymous tweeted last Sunday.
“I know we screwed up but at least we didn’t do something crazy like sexualize little girls, right?” The Girl Scouts spokeswomen added.
