OSAKA, JAPAN – An annoyed, and oddly intrigued, expat American has come to realize that his Japanese friends are all “weirdly obsessed with doctors,” after over half of them turned up to his Halloween party in white surgical masks.
“At first I thought they were all playing a joke on me, then I thought that there was a serious medical emergency, but now I just realize that Japanese people have a peculiar fetish for dressing up as healthcare workers.” He said.
“It’s surprising because I thought that everyone would come in those elaborate anime costumes you see at Comic Conn, not just cheap white facemasks.” He told us.
While initially frustrated by the lack of originality his guests showed, the man did have a theory for why so many people dressed up as medical professionals.
“At least half of the people on the train every morning are either surgeons, nurses or vets. Last week I sat next to an entire family of dentists at a restaurant. Heck, from what I’ve seen, Japan has the most children with MD’s in the world! They have so many healthcare workers that their culture obviously has a deep respect for medicine.”
“They do it every day, not just on Halloween, so dressing up like doctors must be a sign of endearment. I bet it’s kind of like how we wear players’ jerseys on game day in America.” He added.
